About Religious School

Only learning that is enjoyed will be learned well.R. Judah haNasi

Pre-K through 7th Grade

Our Religious School enrolls learners from age 4 through 7th Grade.  Our school creates vivid Jewish experiences allowing every child to explore their identity and values and develop strong bonds to community.  Students study Hebrew, Judaic studies, music and tefilah (prayer) in age-appropriate challenging and engaging classes.

(During the quarantine for COVID-19, we have adapted our programs to be accessible to students with a mobile phone, tablet or laptop via Zoom.)

B’nai Mitzvah

Our B’nai Mitzvah program involves one-on-one study with a tutor to prepare each student according to their abilities and unique learning styles to celebrate their Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Contact us to schedule a meeting or for more information about celebrating your child’s bar or bat mitzvah at Ohr Shalom.

Ben Zoma says:
  Who is wise?
The one who learns from every person…
  Who is brave?
The one who subdues his negative inclination…
  Who is rich?
The one who is appreciates what he has…
  Who is honored?
The one who gives honor to others…

Teen Education

We encourage our teens to continue pursuing Jewish education through one of the many venues available in the San Diego Jewish community.  We recommend the Community Jewish High program, a collaboration between several local synagogues, which offers a diverse social atmosphere and more adult learning on a variety of Judaic subjects.

Our teens may also work as Madrichim in the Religious School.  They are provided periodic training and opportunities to develop new skills and responsibilities.  The teens then work in classrooms to assist teachers and support students in their many learning activities.  Teens are valued members of our learning community and essential to the smooth operation of our school, and incredible role models for our pre-b'nai mitzvah students.
