Ingredients and materials for Kadima Cooks: August 10!

The August 10 cooking project comes to us with high demand from recent participants! (And really, whose life is NOT improved by a well-baked chocolate cake, resting in the kitchen until after dinner?) *Our cake will NOT look exactly like the one pictured above!
This recipe comes to us from the Cooking Jewish cookbook (a great one if you haven’t cooked with it yet! Available at Amazon in Kindle, and print formats!)
Ingredients for Cake:
Butter or cooking spray (for buttering the pan)
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
8 Tbsp (1 stick) butter at room temperature
1 ¼ cups sugar
2 large eggs at room temperature
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
For Mocha Frosting:
8 Tbsp (1 stick) unsalted butter at room temperature
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp instant coffee
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon salt
1 box (16 oz) confectioners’ sugar, sifted
½ cup milk, warmed
Materials:
Oven preheated to 350* F
13×9 inch cake pan
Measuring cups and spoons
3 bowls for mixing
Mixing spoons
Spatula
Hand or stand mixer with beater attachment
Sifter
Cake tester (toothpick, skewer or spaghetti strand)
Wire rack or other suitable spot for cooling the cake
Offset spatula, or other stiff utensil for applying frosting to cake
*The Kadima Cooks series is open to all ages, but skills and materials will be geared toward elementary-age participants and require minimal hands-on parental support (for example, placing and removing items in the oven).
